Player notes : Known as
"Mr. Cub", Ernie Banks is perhaps the most beloved player in the history of the lovable losers. Although he played more games in his career at first base, Banks made his reputation as a shortstop during the 1950s. He was the most prolific home run hitter ever to play shortstop, leading the National League in 1958. He also led the league in RBI in 1959, and won back-to-back MVP awards despite playing on mediocre teams. His infectious enthusiasm for the game ("Let's play two!") won him a legion of fans, and an enduring place in the lore of the game.
