Player notes: Lyman Bostock was the son of a former Negro League player, who had established himself as a solid Major Leaguer with a bright future until he was felled by a murderer's bullet in Gary, Indiana near the end of the 1978 season. He played most of his career with the Minnesota Twins, but was with the Angels for his final season when he was killed.
The Birmingham, Alabama native was a popular player who donated part of his free-agent bonus money to his church in Birmingham, and offered to refund part of the money to the Angels when he got off to a slow start in the 1978 season. Owner Gene Autry declined, and Bostock performed well for the rest of the season until his tragic death.
