Player notes: He was perhaps the top second
baseman of his era. He was an outstanding defensive
player, with great range, and had good power at the
plate. He was a key part of six pennant winning teams,
five with the Yankees and one with Cleveland. His career
numbers of 253 HR and 975 RBI were outstanding for a
middle infielder who also possessed excellent defensive
skills. Those number would have been even better had
he not lost two prime seasons to World War II. Gordon
also managed several years in the American League in
the 50s and 60s.
Bill James thinks Gordon should be in the Hall of Fame
(see The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract),
and it is hard to argue with him. By just about any
measure, Gordon was among the top second basemen of
all time.
