Player notes: Bobby Grich was probably the premier
secondbaseman in the American League in the late seventies
and early eighties. He was an excellent fielder, and
a scrappy competitor who had unusual power for a middle
infielder of that era. He was a spark plug on the first
Angels team to win a division title, and while the team
never quite got over the hump to win a league pennant,
Grich was a key reason they were always very competitive
during his tenure there. Grich led the American League
in slugging percentage in the strike shortened 1981
season, and tied for the home run title that year. He
was the kind of man you think of when you hear the word
"ballplayer".
