Player notes: Gwynn is the outstanding hitter of his generation. He led the National League in batting average an incredible eight times, and led the league in hits six times. He batted over .300 17 consecutive times, a mark bettered only by Ty Cobb's 23 consecutive years in all major league history. Perhaps no player has ever had as great an impact on a franchise as Tony had with the Padres. Spending his entire career with the San Diego franchise, he holds no fewer than 20 Padre batting records, including career and single season records for most hits, singles, doubles, and triples. A sure first ballot choice for the Hall of Fame once he becomes eligible, Gwynn retired after the 2001 season. Always a class act and great ambassador for the game, he will be missed on the field, but never forgotten by those who had the pleasure to watch him play. |
