Diamond Fans notes: Haddix is best known as
the pitcher who pitched a perfect game for 12 innings,
but then lost the game in the 13th when the
Braves scored a run off him to win 1-0. He also picked
up two wins in the Pirates' victory over the Yankees
in the 1960 World Series (one as a starter, one in relief).
The big picture is that Haddix, while not an overpowering
pitcher, was a reasonably effective National League
starter throughout the 50s and into the 60s. His best
year overall was his first full season, in 1953. He
ended his career as a relief pitcher with the Baltimore
Orioles, having amassed a respectable total of 136 wins.
That remarkable 13 inning loss in 1959 is enough to
secure his place in baseball history.
