Player notes: An Ohio native of German descent,
Henrich was a key player on the great Yankee teams of
the 1940s. Mel Allen, the Yankee broadcaster, gave him
the nickname "Old Reliable" for his ability
to come through in clutch situations. The outfield he
played in for the Yankees in the late 40s (Henrich,
Joe DiMaggio, and Charlie Keller) is considered one
of the great outfields of all time.
Henrich was a five time All Star, and led the AL in
runs once (1948) and in triples twice (1947, 1948).
Additional fan comments:
I started going to the Stadium in 1936, and thought
Henrich was almost as good as peerless Dimaggio in the
field, certainly in the same league[no pun]--caroms
off the right-field wall, and throwing to the plate
included.
