Player notes: Kell spent his entire career in
the American League, playing for five different teams,
most notably with the Tigers from 1946-52. He batted
.300 for eight consecutive seasons, and was the American
League's premier third baseman during the postwar era.
His winning of the batting title in 1949 prevented Ted
Williams from winning the Triple Crown for the third
time. Kell batted .3429 to Williams' .3428.
Kell was a fine fielder at third base as well as a
high-average hitter, though he did not hit for a lot
of power. In addition to his batting title, he finished
in the top five in BA six times, while the highest he
ever finished in slugging pct. was eighth (two times).
