Player notes: Lary was an outstanding pitcher for the Detroit Tigers through the late Fifties. He was especially tough on the Yankees, at one point (1958-59) winning 13 of 14 decisions against them. Such feats earned him the nickname "Yankee Killer.". He played in three All Star games and won a Gold Glove (1961). 1961 was his last good year. At that point he had pitched over 200 innings for seven straight years, and apparently his arm gave out. He was never very effective after that, and retired after the 1965 season.
