Player notes: Mathews was one of the all-time
great home run hitting third basemen. He combined with
teammate Henry Aaron to hit 863 home runs, the all-time
record for a pair of teammates. He led the league in
homers twice, and hit over 40 four different seasons.
Although he never won an MVP award, he finished second
in the voting twice, and in the top 10 four times. Mathews
was the only player to play for the Braves in all three
cities in which the franchise has been located (Boston,
Milwaukee, and Atlanta). Until Mike Schmidt came along,
he probably ranked as the greatest third basemen in
history. Just a great, great player.
Mathews played almost his entire career with the Braves,
but ended his career with the Detroit Tigers, his last
appearance being in the 1968 World Series. He died in
Feburary, 2001.
