Player notes: McGwire will forever be known
for his dramatic shattering of Roger Maris' single-season
home run record in 1998. His chase with Sammy Sosa to
surpass Maris' mark captured the imagination of baseball
fans throughout the world.
Earlier in his career, McGwire formed a powerful hitting
tandem with teammate Jose Canseco of the Oakland A's.
Nicknamed "The Bash Brothers", the duo helped
lead Oakland to three consecutive American League titles
(1988-90) and one World Series championship in 1989.
Traded to St. Louis in 1997, McGwire fell in love with
St. Louis and the National League style of play. He
became a great fan favorite in St. Louis, but his home
run record was soon broken by Barry Bonds and his legacy
has been clouded by the recent steroid controversy.
He didn't do himself any favors with his unforthcoming
testimony at the recent Congressional hearings. We will
have to wait quite some time for posterity to render
it's final verdict on his place in baseball history.
