Player notes:Rick Monday
was a slugging outfielder for several teams during the 1970s and early
80s. He amassed a total of 241 home runs in 19 seasons, reaching a high
of 32 is 1976. He only hit one post-season home run, but it was a big
one: he hit the game winning home run in the 9th inning of game 5 of the
1981 NLCS to vault the Dodgers into the World Series. Monday also gained
national acclaim in 1976 while playing for the Cubs when he stopped two
protesters from burning the American flag on the field during a game at
Dodger Stadium. A popular player during his playing days, Monday went
on to a successful career as a local television sports personality in
Los Angeles after his playing days were over.
