Player notes: Roberts was the most dominant
pitcher in the National League during the early 1950s.
He was an All Star every year from 1950 to 1956, winning
20 or more games in each of those years except for '56,
when he won 19. His 1952 campaign was fabulous: his
28 wins that season were 10 more than the league runner-up
(Sal Maglie).
Roberts had excellent control for a power pitcher,
leading the league in fewest bases on balls four times.
He developed arm trouble in 1956 and was less effective
during the second half of his career, but his early
brilliance earned him a well-deserved place in the Hall
of Fame.
