Player notes: Roush was a key player on the
1919 Reds team that won the infamous "Black Sox"
series. While the World Series title may be considered
tainted by the fact that some of the Sox players were
paid to throw the games, the 1919 Reds were a legitimately
strong team in their own right, and Roush (who won the
league batting title that season) was one of the main
reasons.
Roush won two NL batting championships (1917 &
1919) and finished in the top five in batting seven
times. He used a heavy (48 oz.) bat that is said to
be the heaviest ever used regularly in the Major Leagues.
He was also a fine defensive centerfielder.
Roush lived to be 94 years old. At the time of his
death in 1988 he was the oldest living member of the
Hall of Fame.
