Player notes: Schmidt is generally regarded as
not only the greatest third baseman of his era, but
the greatest of all time. He could do it all. He was
an excellent fielder, a premier power hitter, and a
savvy baserunner. His three MVP awards and numerous
Gold Gloves attest to his all around excellence. He
led the NL in home runs eight times, and hit over 30
dingers 13 times. Mike Schmidt is truly one of the game's
all-time greats.
