Player notes: Torrez was a big
(6' 5"), well-traveled right-hander who pitched
for seven different teams during his career. He
spent significant time with the Cardinals (with
whom he broke in), The A's, and the Red Sox. Perhaps
his greatest accomplishment, however, was for a
club with whom he spent only part of one season:
the New York Yankees. After coming to the Yankees
in an April 1977 trade with the A's, Torrez helps
the New Yorkers win the pennant by posting 14 wins
for the Yankees (including seven straight in July
and August), then won two complete game victories
over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
He won 15 or more games seven times during his career,
including six years in a row from 1974-79, and was
a 20 game winner in 1975 with the Orioles.
On a less positive note, Torrez , who was known for
his wildness, was the pitcher who beaned Dickie Thon
of the Houston Astros in April of 1984 (Torrez' last
year in the majors), thus derailing Thon's promising
career. He also threw the pitch that Bucky Dent hit
for a three-run homer in the 1978 AL East playoff which
led to the Yankees' 5-4 win over the Red Sox.
